India defeated Australia by 6 wickets in the 2nd test match in Delhi to retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy for the 4th time in a row. India defeated Australia in 3 days for the second time in the India vs Australia test series to go 2-0 up in the 4 test match series. India was set a target of 115 after Jadeja wreaked havoc with the ball to clean up Australia for 113 in their 2nd innings. Indian batters then played some handy knocks around Cheteshwar Pujara to take India home and make sure they retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy and retain their dominance at home.
Australia opted to bat first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi and courtesy of half-centuries from Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb posted 263 in their 1st innings. Cummins chipped in with a handy 33 lower down the order. Shami was the pick of Indian bowlers with 4 wickets while Ashwin and Jadeja finished with 3 wickets a piece. India defeated Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first test in Nagpur.
India started well in reply to Australia’s 1st innings score but their batting lineup was challenged by some impeccable bowling from Nathan Lyon and the other spinners. At one point, the Aussie bowlers had their opponents reeling at 139 for 7. But, Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin put on a 114-run 8th wicket partnership to dent Australia’s chances of securing a healthy 1st innings lead. India eventually finished on 262, 1 shy of their opponents’ 1st innings score.
Australia put on some quick runs in the first essay of their 2nd innings but all started going downhill after Travis Head and Steve Smith got dismissed within 6 overs. Jadeja picked up 7 wickets and Ashwin the rest to skittle out Australia for 113 in their 2nd innings.
India did lose some wickets in their 2nd innings but eventually kept with their scoring tempo before the pitch deteriorated more to swell India’s lead to 2 against nil against Australia. With this win, India has also become the first team to hold on to the Border Gavaskar Trophy four times in a row. Ravindra Jadeja was adjudged the player of the match for his astonishing performance with the ball in the 2nd innings. The 3rd test match of BGT 2023 will be played in Indore from March 01.
