The reason being about the peculiar representation of dot balls as trees on the scorecard during the playoffs of the IPL 2023. The opening game of the playoffs took place at Chepauk. It featured a clash between the Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans. GT opted to bowl first after winning the toss. During the first innings of IPL 2023 qualifier 1, the traditional dot ball symbol was replaced with a depiction of a tree for every instance of a dot ball. This alteration surprised fans, who sought an explanation for the modification in the graphical representation on the scorecard. The symbol served as a message concerning environmental concerns and the escalating challenges posed by global warming.
The rationale behind employing the tree symbol stems from a collaboration between the TATA Group and the Indian Premier League. It aimed to promote tree plantation initiatives throughout the nation. For each dot ball bowled during the IPL 2023 playoffs, TATA Group and the IPL pledge to plant 500 trees. This endeavor is part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) eco-friendly initiative. The playoffs consist of four games: Qualifier 1, Eliminator 1, Qualifier 2, and the Final. The Final will take place at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. The participating teams in the Indian Premier League playoffs are the Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Mumbai Indians.

In addition to the TATA Group and the IPL, the Royal Challengers Bangalore also actively encourages individuals to engage in tree plantation efforts. As part of their commitment, RCB hosts a special “Go Green” initiative game at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium once every season, during which they don green jerseys to promote tree-planting initiatives. This year, they played against the Rajasthan Royals while donning their green jerseys. Apart from the green initiative, the Gujarat Titans don lavender-colored jerseys in one of their games to raise awareness about the battle against chronic diseases such as cancer.
