India defeated Australia in the 1st test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 by an innings and 132 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the 4-match test series. India defeated the ranked 1 team in the ICC men’s test rankings within 3 days to take their first step towards qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 final. This is Australia’s second-lowest test innings score against India.
Batting first, Australia was dismissed for 177 despite some rearguard action from Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Alex Carey and Peter Handscomb. India replied with 400 runs on the board with the help of a brilliant century from the skipper Rohit Sharma and half-centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Shami’s quickfire 37 down the order helped India’s lead swell past 200. Todd Murphy was the pick of the Australian bowlers with a 7-wicket haul in his debut test.
The Indian bowlers, especially Ashwin and Jadeja, were lethal in the 2nd innings. Both of them shared 7 wickets amongst themselves to shoot out their opponents for 91. Shami cleaned up the Aussie tail to hand his team an emphatic victory. Jadeja was adjudged the Player of the Match for his all-round performance in the 1st test match.

Never judge a pitch until both teams have batted on it. If both teams struggle, it's the pitch. If just one team struggles, it's the skills. Well played Team India 🇮🇳 👏🏽 #INDvAUS #AUSvsIND #BGT2023 #BGT pic.twitter.com/7kt0peNeOU
