The recently concluded India vs Sri Lanka ODI series has given the Indian selectors a sweet headache going forward to the upcoming ICC men’s ODI world cup in October-November 2023. Expected performances were delivered by players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Umran Malik and Axar Patel. However, a few players performed exceptionally well and can prove to be the dark horses for the upcoming ICC men’s world cup in India. In this blog, we will discuss those names who were a part of the India vs Sri Lanka ODI squad and have given the selectors plenty to ponder when they finalize the ODI world cup squad in a few months.
Shubman Gill
When Rohit announced before the 1st ODI at Guwahati that Shubman Gill will open with him, many eyebrows were raised as it seemed injustice was being done with Ishan Kishan, who recently smashed a record-breaking double century against Bangladesh. However, Gill put all those questions to rest with his scintillating performance in the Sri Lanka ODI series. He scored 207 runs in 3 games with one half-century and a century at a healthy average of 69. He has solidified his position as Rohit’s opening partner but with many players breathing down his neck, he must not become relaxed.
Mohammad Siraj
Mohammad Siraj’s performance throughout the India vs Sri Lanka ODI series has allowed the Indian cricket team fans to breathe easy. Only a couple of months ago, the ICT fans were sweating over the fact that who would lead the Indian seam attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. Siraj, with 9 wickets in the series, has announced to the ICT fans that he, along with the rest, can ensure the opposition is not let off the hook easily with the ball. His line, length and movements off the surface and air were troublesome for the Lankan batters throughout the series. Even when Bumrah is match-fit, Siraj has ensured to establish himself as Bumrah’s bowling partner in the ODIs.
Kuldeep Yadav
After Yuzvendra Chahal’s injury, Kuldeep Yadav was drafted into the playing 11 for the 2nd ODI against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens. It has been a long since people have witnessed an injury replacement giving a statement with his performance. Kuldeep Yadav became India’s enforcer in the middle overs by picking up important wickets with his guile and speed. In the 2nd ODI, Kuldeep picked up 3 wickets and he followed it up with 2 wickets in the final ODI. The ball to dismiss Dasun Shanaka in the 3rd ODI reminded cricket fans of his ball in the 2019 World Cup to dismiss Babar Azam. He has performed well enough to declare himself as India’s premier wrist spinner going into the ODI world cup later this year.
